many years ago I saw a nice detailed picture in an add in the back of the shotgun news for this sako 375 H&H carbine that looked something similar like this, but with far darker, almost black walnut wood and I decided I (NEEDED IT) badly, the cost was much higher than reason, would suggest be spent, but once a 4x Leopold scope was installed it served very well for many years as my second ELK rifle, loaded with 300 grain hornady bullets, over a stiff charge of WW760 powder (77 grains) and a federal 215 primer, its never failed to kill ELK VERY effectively.
this is probably not a cost effective combo , as the rifles expensive and you need to handload to afford the ammo, but its certainly very dependable, and kills ELK like THORS HAMMER in the thick timber at ranges under 200-250 yards, (most of the shots/KILLS Ive had were WELL UNDER)so IVE always loved hunting with it in the dark timber or snowy days
its 20" barrel limits the 300 grain bullets to about 2450fps but the ELK don,t seem to see the limitations that poses,Ive had a couple ELK looking at me in thick lodge pole timber and shots to the central chest, or shoulder as they spin to run, seem to do a good job
If I remember correctly one of the gun rag writers had a similar carbine in 30/06 sprg. (wooters maybe) and his worked really well also

If I remember correctly Wooters did have a similar rifle but in .308. I have always wanted a rifle with a full length stock. But there should always be at least one gun a person wants to keep the imagination going.

You have a nice rifle there in a very classic caliber.

I think you may be thinking of Wooter's custom model Winchester model 88 that was rebarreled into 7mm/08 and stocked in a beautiful full length stock. He stated it was his favorite rifle that was sadly stolen later.

Altjaeger, I looked around and finally found the one book I had that was written by Wootters - Hunting Trophy Deer. This book is dated 1977. In scanning the book there are three photographs of him with deer and a full length stocked bolt action rifle. I could not find anywhere a description of the rifle or caliber. To me it looks like a short action Sako but I,m not sure. I seem to remember him using a .308 in that rifle, maybe from an article. I have also heard of the model 88 that he had customized.

As popular as he was I 'm sure he had a rather large gun collection with the probable gifts and discounts he would have received.

Smokey & Alt:

I was thinking that Wooters pet rifle was a 308 Sako with a full length stock. IIRC, he said it was not really a tack drivr from the bench, but it's balance and handling qualities made it deadly and dependable in the field.

My memory ain't what it used to be, but the long-term memory is better than the short term memory:)

As a big fan of Wooters, I recall those stories and photos of that gun.
I think later he became a proponent of the 7-08.

I am sure you all are right and he used a full length stocked SAKO as well. I seem to have some vague memories after the discussion, but having only memories of his articles I don't claim total recall.:D

The M88 has stuck in my mind and I was a bit envious. I doubt I ever will, but sometimes I consider what it might cost to stock my M88 similarly.

I remember some 20 years ago when he suffered the detached retina that forced him to pistols and rifles he had before considered inadequate. I am sorry to hear of the stroke.

Pepaw, thanks for the update. I have always liked John Wootters common sense writing style. Reminded me somewhat of Jack O'Connor's style. I was surprised at John's age but when you get older like me the time does go by fast.
