Nice mass in those antlers WBH. It always seemed to me that the northern states had better average mule deer antler mass than the southern states variety. Do you think that there is a different sub-species like in whitetail deer? Or is it just the less accessible more heavily forested older age structure of the bucks on more private property?

Hi, Bushman! Yep, you're correct about the mass in northern bucks... most older bucks in their prime up here acquire a lot of mass to their antlers. Local herd genetics play a role as well... with 'heavy-horned' daddy passing on traits, etc. I'm not 100% sure, but feed sources also surely play a big role in this, as do the average age of the bucks being harvested. There could well be some sub-species divisions within the mule deer population. I'm no expert on wildlife genetics, but there certainly does seem to be some genetic diversity out there.

My brother guided a couple of Gov tag hunters here, and according to these guys (who've hunted all over the map)... our herds are about the best in the country right now - for seeing large numbers a true trophy heads and the op to score on a B&C'r... I just pray the wolves don't start taking too many in these spots! The wolves have sure raised all hell in some of the more 'known' and less secret spots all around these parts. :(

This pic is from this November when Babe Winkelman and his wife Kris of Babe Winkelman's Outdoor Secrets - VERSUS TV hunted (most recently) here in Montana. They were also guests during the archery elk season, when Kris killed her first ever animal with a bow (5x5 bull). I'll post a segment of that vid on the archery forum or elk forum.... eventually.
