Yeah, I think I might ask the proprietor to display the flag of the United States of America using proper flag etiquette. If he refused, then I would cut it down but I would make sure that I had sharpened my knife first.

I am not sure if a flag is considered private property or if it's symbol of our country takes precedence over private property issues. In essence the big guy stole a US flag on camera.

I could care less what kind of flag someone flies on their business or residence. Hell, my dad flies a "Rebel" flag and he also flies an American flag using proper etiquette. Only the State of Texas has the option of flying the State flag at the same height as the US flag. We seldom do and fly it under the US flag.

The flags of other countries may be flow at equal height as the US flag but never higher. Normally we show the same regard for the flags of other nations. Normally our president doesn't bow to despots but these aren't normal times we're living in. These are times of change. Yes, the times they are a changin.

I believe the flag can be considered private property. And I am not sure if an individual can be stopped or is permitted to make it right if it is flown incorrectly. Obviously the building or store owner new something was wrong as he did not attempt to stop the removal of the flag.

I would hope I would...

I think Merle said it best..

I hear people talkin' bad,
About the way we have to live here in this country,
Harpin' on the wars we fight,
gripin' 'bout the way things oughta be.
I don't mind 'em switchin' sides,
An' standin' up for things that they believe in.

But When they're runnin' down my country, man,
They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.

Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me.

Runnin' down the way of life,
Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep.

If you don't love it, leave it:
Let this song I'm singin' be a warnin'.

If you're runnin' down my country, man,
You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.

This is not the only incident like this...

Not treating the flag with respect does irk me. A few years ago someone down the street was flying an American flag that was so wind blown that the stripe portion was in pieces. I put a note in his mailbox to the effect that people thought it was disrespectful to fly the flag in that deteriorated condition. It worked because he got a new flag.

There is one flying south of here that is so weatherbeaten that it is all the way down to the star portion and that irritates me no end.

This one has been around for a while now. I called the Mall Manager about the flag being put up upside down one day. They sent two Hispanics up who took it down and put it back up incorrectly a second time. My call to the Mall Manager became a personal visit to Her Office. The flag was soon flying correctly.

As to what this incident involved, I think I too would make sure I had a sharper knife. Since I am always within an arm's reach of a firearm I don't think I would be worried about any retalliation. Besides, I'm SIXTY, who wants to live forever if we have to do it in chains.

OK, so we first we have to acknowledge that the TV crew put this guy up to it, which is why he cut the flag down and then answered the [off-camera] question about his 'reaction'. And so he knew he was on camera, so there's the Kodak Courage aspect to it. Plus, I'd bet he figured nobody would mess with him on tape, because it'd be too easy to prosecute them for it.

They asked him to perform and they gave him a safety net. That's a different kind of thing than just walking up to a business and messing with the owner's possessions.

So I don't know if I'd do that or not. Not under those contrived conditions, anyway.

Also, I would not have taken my knife to the other flag, nor would I have thrown it in the dirt. Being willing to fight as dirty as the next guy doesn't help you win; it only allows the other guy to set the rules, at which point you're choosing not to be responsible for your own behavior, in which case the other guy has already scored the moral victory.

Personally, right now I feel reluctant to fly my flag. I guess I know how Mchelle felt when she said it was the first time she felt proud of Ameria because for the first time I am feeling a bit ashamed. I won't disrespect my country, but I kind of feel violated by ACORN and stupid people.
