    Default Last evening...

While stalking Roebuck, I crossed the path of a vixen on her way back from shopping. She died so suddenly that she had no time to release what she was bringing back to the hole : 2 field mice and 1 slow worm !

Great photo's of an interesting kill. I'm not familiar with a slow worm. It looks interesting.

"Anguis fragilis", also called "glass snake" because of its habit of shedding parts of its tail when caught and actually "breaking loose". As a matter of facts, it's not a snake but a lizzard sans legs. The shown example was a female anguis, recognizable by the dark stripes running along the flanks.

Our game keeper keeps an eye out for them. In the meantime, he has reported a male fox carrying food along the same path, so the story of this fox family in not over (yet)...

I seem to remember reading somewhere that there are no snakes in Europe. True? Or was that only England? Only thing I can think is that in hunting for almost nine years in Germany, I never saw a snake.

Ireland I believe as in St Paddy charmed the snakes into the sea!

I am not sure about England, but there are a few snakes in Europe. I remember one year reading in the Stars and Stripes of an annual migration in northern Italy where cars had to be careful on the roads. They had "snake crossing" sign because the species was considered endangered.

We have grass snakes and adders but in rather small numbers; both are integraly protected though. Unless a person is allergic, the latter's bite should not really pose a lethal threat and I don't remember hearing of a casualty, besides a lone case where a hunting dog was bitten in the nose.
